Supporting neurodivergence

Handelsman Psychology specialises in offering support for neurodivergent children and young people.

We are committed to offering neurodiversity affirming services. This means:

  • we embrace the uniqueness and strengths of every neurodivergent child

  • we respect all forms of communication, respect co-regulation and consider sensory supports when meeting with children and young people

  • we recognise that neurodivergent children and young people have different ways of processing information, learning, communicating and socialising; this may include skills which are personal strengths and others which are personal difficulties

  • we help neurodivergent children and young people identify their unique support needs in different environments and advocate for these to and with their family and schools

  • we continue to listen to and learn from those with lived experience.

"You are the expert in your child. We bring our expertise in psychology and child development to help you help them."

"So, now what?" Educational Psychology Consultation package

Three 50 minute sessions with Dr Gemma Handelsman (EP) and brief notes with clear actions and resources following each session.

Are you a parent feeling stuck in how to support your child's learning, development or wellbeing?

Would you like to understand more about neurodivergence, pre or post diagnosis? Or about how to support your child's learning or wellbeing or behaviour?

Has your child recently received an neurodevelopmental diagnosis (such as autism or ADHD)? Feeling overwhelmed with the report, what to say or what to do next?

Would you like support discussing your child with their teachers or the school SENCo?

This package creates a space for you to:

  • Share your concerns about your child and/or their educational experiences

  • Develop your understanding of how your child learns, processes information and communicates with others

  • Identify what works best for your child at home and/or at nursery/school and collaboratively find solutions

  • Generate ideas for next steps, which may include signposting to further services or support

  • Prepare for important meetings with nursery/school or other professionals

1

Assess & Plan

A compassionate space for you to share your concerns about your child and/or their educational experiences, explore your child’s strengths and challenges, agree a clear goal for Session Two, and explore possible strategies and next steps . This might include reviewing reports or assessments from other professionals to support your understanding.

2

Do

A flexible session structured according to the goal agreed in Session One. This may be a joint consultation with parents and school staff so we can problem solve as a team around your child. It may include exploring an aspect of your child’s development in more detail or sharing resources. It will likely provide you or school staff with some next steps/actions to try out.

3

Review (4-6 weeks later)

An opportunity to reflect on the next steps/actions from Session Two and the progress towards your goal from Session One. It’s a chance for you to share successes since our last consultation or bring barriers you faced so we can problem solve together. We may then end our services or offer follow-up support.
